With trial runs in progress and operations at the last leg, Kanpur metro is likely to hit the tracks by the end of December 2021. The metro will be functional in its first phase along the 9 kilometer long elevated priority corridor between IIT Kanpur and Moti Jheel.

As per the details of the projects, the Research Design and Standards Organizations have set a 6-week trial duration before the services can be fully availed by the public. The trials will be undertaken to test features and functionalities like in-motion train vibration, train suspension, brakes and speed to ensure a foolproof service at the public's disposal.

The second phase of development is already underway with the launching of the construction of Corridor- I from Chunniganj to Nayaganj. It is a 23 km long Corridor. Besides this, the work on Corridor- 2 from Chandrashekhar Azad Agriculture University to Barra is also being said to be completed by the next three years. Reportedly, the Metro Corporation is aiming to expand the Kanpur Metro Network to up to 32.4 km by December 2024.

Kanpur Metro Project has been one of the fastest progressing development projects of Uttar Pradesh that has been completed within a 2 year time graph despite the obstacles due to Coronavirus pandemic.  The metro project will be a boon for the people of the city in addition to solving problems like traffic congestion, road accidents, lack of parking spaces and air pollution.
