Preparations for Kanpur Metro’s commercial operation from IIT to Kanpur Central are now in the final stage. A trial run up to Kanpur Central will be conducted this month post which, operations can successfully start from December.
The current operations of Kanpur metro are on the priority corridor from IIT to Moti Jheel which is a 9 km distance that the metro covers. However, once commercial operations begin all the way up to Kanpur Central, the extension will be able to connect key business hubs like Naveen Market, Bada Chauraha and Naya Ganj to the metro network.
The five stations falling between Moti Jheel and Kanpur Central namely Chunniganj, Naveen Market, Bada Chauraha, Nayaganj and Kanpur Central will all be underground. This underground metro service will run at intervals of 10-12 minutes.
As of now, the road journey between IIT and Moti Jheel takes about 60-75 minutes but with the metro, this distance will be covered in half an hour, thereby reducing travel time and traffic congestion in the city.
To prepare for the commercial operation, recently, a trial run was conducted on both the tracks from Moti Jheel to Nayaganj station. Important systems like signaling, track and power supply were tested while running the train on Automatic Protection (ATP) mode.
